A Gift From Mom

Many years ago, before I was given my own vintage Singer straight stitch sewing machine, Mom had purchased a sewing machine for her small projects. Me, being fairly knowledgeable in the sewing department, quickly learned the ins & outs of her particular model.

I happily did chores to earn extra money and it didn't take much for me to talk Grandma into taking me shopping for supplies. Of course, we already had a supply of reclaimed buttons in the Roger's syrup can and large safety pins holding various lengths of zippers salvaged from beyond-repair pants. My 'Barbie' had some of the coolest designer clothes on the block! Worn out jeans were always available for pretty much anything else I wanted to sew ~ pencil cases, purses and tote bags were frequent requests from family, friends & neighbours.

Bit of background history ~ Grandpa taught me how to thread a needle, knot the thread and sew on a button. Grandma taught me to embroider basic stitches on stamped patterns. I learned to sew on my grandparents' treadle machine, operating the foot pedal & helping "steer" the fabric. By the time I started grade school, I knew my way around that old Singer quite well. I was fun to thread it and I even knew which parts needed to be cleaned & oiled =)

Jump ahead a couple of years ~ Mom bought her machine, barely used, in 1973, as far as we were able to establish. Not sure who was more excited ~ Mom because she had her own machine and it was darn fancy for it's time with all the extra stitches, presser feet, fancy needles and stuff ~ or me because I now had access to a sewing machine at all times, 7 steps down the stairs, with fancy stitches, neat presser feet and cool double needles!!

Several years, and a few models of sewing machines, later ~ Mom decided her machine was collecting dust and asked if I would like to have it... Heck, Yes!! Home it came with me to join my collection... an early fully-computerized Bernina, a digital embroidery machine, Grandma's inherited mid-70s school room model Singer and a mechanical serger.

We've spent numerous hours scouring the internet for information about Mom's machine. It is without a doubt vintage as it's been in our family for at least 40 years. The biggest issue is that it isn't a popular name brand, such as Singer or Bernina. We were unable to establish any facts regarding manufacturer, retail price, compatibility with other models' parts (i.e. presser feet, needles, belts), how many were produced/distributed and so on. The original cabinet, owner's manual (printed in Japan/no copyright date) and accessories in the original box show their age but are still in very good condition. As for today's value, being a mass-produced item, these Japanese-made models tend to be on the lower price point end, maybe worth $100 in running order, to a collector.

Here's what we have been able to find out for sure:
~ She's obviously a Model #555
~ The body was made in Japan, established by the manufacturer stamp of J-A/3. We found some very useful information on this blog about vintage sewing machines. The motor has a name plate from International Factory Sales Service Limited, Vancouver, Canada (Canadian Standards Approved). No business history can be found other than this name is now an auto plate glass installer. The actual serial number plate comes up as a blank in all research we've done.

~ Her "badged" name is "International". Following WWII, a large number of sewing machines were manufactured in Japan and subsequently "badged" with a US or Canadian retailer's name to be sold as their brand (Sears Kenmore, for example). Over 5000 "badged brands" were produced by at least 15 different factories. The manufacturers' records are non-existent.

The chances of finding even one machine exactly like her... well, odds are probably better for winning a lottery prize or possibly finding that proverbial needle in the haystack! I have joined the Yahoo! group for collectors of vintage Japanese sewing machines... on the off-chance... maybe one day, somebody, somewhere... =)

Here she is, clean & shiny, ready for a test drive to see what new pieces/parts she may require to bring her back to her working glory!!

Do you have something true vintage that's been passed to you from a family member? We'd love for you to share it with us in the comments below.

Keep well!! Happy treasure hunting!!
...We'll see you next week, here, In The Parlour =)

Treasures Rediscovered...

After unpacking a few of the slowly-dwindling stack of moving boxes yesterday, I have rediscovered even more treasures that I've inherited from my Grandmother's sewing stash...

unused chalk... I have another 5 pieces that are well-used

a flat iron used for collars, cuffs, children's clothing

more unused sewing supplies... the fading original price sticker on the back of the box shows .10

crocheted lace... not sure of the fiber content but most likely rayon or cotton...
I do have enough of each of them for an extra special project... definitely an "heirloom" in the making

the cellophane wrappers are still intact on these... more special projects upcoming

So many treasures... so many "visions of creations"...

Feature Gallery: Cotton Bread Bags

First an update...

Good evening to all. It was a long day spent behind the desk to catch up on paper work again... finish one file and on to the next. Plans have changed for the weekend... no Vancouver trip to visit the Make It! show... no Parksville visit either. We are instead going to stick closer to home and visit a couple of the small local markets going right here on Gabriola Island... The Feedlot Studios is running a market Friday November 25 (5pm – 9pm) and Saturday November 26 (10am – 4pm)... As well, the 2nd Annual Gabriola Artisan Christmas Fair is taking place Saturday November 26 & Sunday November 27 at the Rollo Seniors’ Centre, 685 North Road.

That’s the news of the day from the studio... now on to our feature of today...
cotton bread bags!

The bags are ...Reusable and environmentally friendly (no extra plastic in the landfills) ...Made right here in our studio, with 100% cotton fabric (toss them in with regular kitchen laundry instead of washing bulky plastic containers) ...Have a drawstring at the top for easy open and close (no more broken plastic clips or worn twist ties) ...Finished measurements are 8½” wide by 15½” long to fit a loaf of artisan bread nicely ...Add a unique touch to your kitchen decor ...Each bag is completed with a finishing "artisan's touch" of the hand-stitched embroidery “Bread” in a contrasting color to compliment the fabric ...Makes a great bag when you want to take that fresh bread to your next dinner invite!

Up next in our Feature Gallery will be the small version of a gift bag with a built-in handle... until then...
stay safe, be happy.

Bags, bags, and more bags...

Carla's Victorian Heirlooms is excited to showcase the featured stock for our very first Christmas season. An assortment of cloth bags... reusable, decorative and friendly to the environment by eliminating the need for wrapping paper...

We gave you a sneak peek of a gift bag on November 7, when we showed off the red bag...
yesterday was spent cutting more bags.

For the festive season, lots of red and green... and of course, the holidays would not be complete without the holly fabric.

A smaller version of the handled bags...

Trinket bags to hold small treasures...

The cotton bread bags are also cut and ready for sewing. We posted a bit about those on November 9. We had a few issues with some lettering on them and that is sorted out... finished photos of those will be posted as well this week...

The studio is becoming a flurry of activity with preparations for our upcoming market December 3... our blog followers are the first to see what will be available at our public debut...

There may be 33 more sleeps until Jolly Old St. Nick's arrival but we will back tomorrow... stay warm, stay safe and be happy.

Thank you to Shawn at S. D. Jackson Photography... your camera, your support, and your creative input are deeply appreciated.

Heirloom: a definition of

As defined in The Free Dictionary:
heir·loom n.

1. A valued possession passed down in a family through succeeding generations.
2. An article of personal property included in an inherited estate.
3. A cultivar of a vegetable or fruit that is open-pollinated and is not grown widely for commercial purposes. An heirloom often exhibits a distinctive characteristic such as superior flavor or unusual coloration.

Carla's Victorian Heirlooms creates household items and gift items and individually embellishes each one for a unique finishing touch. As a very young girl, Carla was taught to sew and embroider, working a threaded needle before she could print her full name. Some of the hand tools used in the creations at the studio are heirloom sewing and needlework tools passed down to the artisan from her great grandmother and her grandmother... the very same tools Carla used as a small girl.

Until next time... stay safe, be happy.

Moving right along...

The last couple of days have been consumed with paperwork here in the studio... supplies list for the upcoming market in December, sales forecasts for 2012, working on new product release line sheets... business workshops coming up... and of course, stitching and sewing to work on too...

Hard to believe the New Year is only 6 weeks away! That time will certainly fly by fast just as this past year has... We have the opening Gallery Showcase coming up here on the blog in less than a week so we are busy with those preparations... mark November 21st on your calendar to see what we're kicking off our very first Holiday Season with... Very exciting! We've also been busy getting ready for our market trips to Parksville and Vancouver coming up on the 25th & 26th of this month... I love the hustle and bustle at this time of the year.

Until next time... have you started thinking about those letters to Santa?... stay safe, keep warm and be happy.

Studio update...

The last few days have seen us without power for a stretch of 27 hours. A freak wind storm blew through unexpectedly Friday afternoon, taking down trees and branches and a couple of power lines close to us. In all, it was reported that approximately 50,000 hydro customers lost power. Of course, with the power went the internet... out came the extra blankets and all the candles we could find. Stitching without decent light and heat was not option... the bit of paperwork that I worked on ended when I began to consider putting gloves on to continue... you know it's cold when...

Today is the weekly tea & stitch session in the city... the carousel horse will be finished and the first Victorian heirloom decoration for the booth display will be ready to go for our upcoming show in December... details are in the craft markets listing below... Watch for a picture of that ornament to be added to the gallery this week...

The next couple of weeks will be spent sewing and stitching for the Christmas market... with some business workshops in between... only 20 more sleeps to go until market day... and hard to believe it's only 45 days until Christmas morning! (sure can sneak up on a person when there is so much going on around the studio...)

Until next time... stay safe, be happy.

Gallery production is underway...

A busy day in the studio today... more production is underway in the inventory division of Carla's Victorian Heirlooms. Next off the sewing machine are some cotton bread bags. These bags are wonderful in that we will no longer have to use unsightly containers or plastic bags for storing bread... we can save the landfill from a bit of unneeded waste... and every little bit helps. Cloth bags will certainly outlast any plastic bag that can only be used a few times before it looks like something the wind got a hold of. Throw the cotton bag in with your regular laundry and it is ready for use again and again. Not only all that, they are a decorative addition to your everyday kitchen linens.

Constructed with 100% cotton, the bags have a drawstring top for easy opening and quick closing. They're fantastic to put a loaf of homemade bread in to take to your next dinner host or hostess. Each one is embellished with a bit of decoration as well for a finishing touch of creativity. They are multifunctional ~ you can use them for storing pretty much anything you can think of to put in them.

The new inventory of bags will be showcased here on the blog during the week of November 21. Along with the bread bags, we will be featuring the choices in our jewel-toned gift bag selection... these gift bags wrap a bottle much easier and nicer than a brown paper bag... We have started a pre-order list for the upcoming holiday season so best to order soon to ensure delivery in time for the shipping rush. Ordering and shipping deadlines will be posted during the showcase week as well.

Until next time... don't let your thread run too short... stay safe, be happy.

Wonderful weekend...

Good evening to everyone...

Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. Did anyone have snow over the weekend? It sure felt like it was going to drop some big, fat, wet flakes on us yet all we got were cold raindrops overnight and a bitterly cold wind that is out of the norm for this area. Felt like I was back on the Prairies in winter...

The Nanaimo Professional Craft Fair was a delight to attend. Many talented artisans and crafters filled the room with everything from soup mixes to welded nuts on metal sculpture with several choices of sweet treats for dessert... including melt-in-your-mouth shortbread! It was well worth the hour & a half spent wandering the aisles. Christmas 2012 will be our turn to be behind the table instead of wandering.

Next fair on the list for us is the Parksville Kris Kringle Craft Market that runs November 24th to 27th. This one has almost twice the vendors so I'm thinking it will take about twice as long to wander... As soon as we are finished in Parksville, it's down to Departure Bay ferry to cruise over to the Lower Mainland for Saturday's (November 26) visit of the Make It! Vancouver market...

Now for the best news of the weekend's ventures... Carla's Victorian Heirlooms has secured a table for our first ever Christmas market! Yay!!! Stop by the Gabriola Commons' Christmas Craft Fair on December 3 between 10am and 4 pm and check out our growing selection of reusable bags...
These particular bags are suitable for a bottle of wine (or other smaller gifts) and another bag will hold a yummy loaf of artisan bread. The bag collection is only the beginning of our household linens selection that will be available over the coming months...

Photo courtesy of S. D. Jackson Photography

The best part about all the bags we will be making here in the studio is they are reusable, time and time again. This line of gift bags is made with poly/cotton fabrics... we have a range of jewel-toned colors with contrast prints to choose from available year-round... each one can be ordered with a hand-embroidered monogram for a more personal touch... and they cut down on waste in the landfill sites...

Until tomorrow... stay warm, stay safe, be happy.
